Knowing the indoor air quality of radon in your child’s daycare or preschool is as important as knowing the radon level in your home. Children spend between 8 and 12 hours, 5 days a week in the day care facility. That amounts to approximately ½ of their 24 hour day. If the radon level is low at home you would want to know, and if needed, address the issue at your child’s day care.

Every home is dynamically different even though the floor plan may be the same. The building materials, such as the foundation aggregate gravel may come from different quarries, the HVAC systems may be different. All of the specifics may appear to be similar, however, three variables of radon levels (amount of source, ability of the home to pull it in and its ability to hold it in) can and are different from home to home.

Every home has radon. We are a planet that has radioactive minerals and elements. We even have some radon outside as the radon leaves the interior of the earth.

The “skeletal” or passive system built into the home maybe removing some radon.  However, the Illinois Building code which require that new homes be built with the Radon Resistant New Construction (RFRNC) skeletal system were designed to:

1. Assist in some radon reduction,
2. Have an available vent stack if the radon level in the home necessitates “activating” the radon reduction system as a whole.

You will not know if activating the system is necessary until you test.
